Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It appears that the purpose of the question is in consideration of the income of the airhostess as her work violates the principle of women remaining indoors and adhering the laws of Hijab. We should also point out that Shari’ah has granted leeway to women to earn income in dire circumstances.[1] Accordingly, we cannot issue a general ruling of prohibition for a woman working, irrespective of her being an airhostess or any other work.

However, if a woman has a legitimate reason in Shari’ah to work, she has to abide by the laws of Shari’ah to the best of her ability.[2] If she violates the laws of Shari’ah, she is negligent in that regard and her income will be tainted. Women working under constrained circumstances should guard their modesty, and dignity as a Muslim.

Nevertheless, if Qurbāni is compulsory upon an airhostess, and she fulfils her obligation, it will be valid.[3] The fact that she works in such a harsh environment and is still conscious of her religious duties is highly commendable.

وَأَمَّا الْمُتَوَفَّى عَنْهَا زَوْجُهَا فَلَهَا أَنْ تَخْرُجَ بِالنَّهَارِ لِحَوَائِجِهَا وَلَكِنَّهَا لَا تَبِيتُ فِي غَيْرِ مَنْزِلِهَا لِمَا رُوِيَ «أَنَّ فُرَيْعَةَ بِنْتَ مَالِكٍ بْنِ أَبِي سِنَانٍ أُخْتَ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ – رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ – جَاءَتْ إلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ – صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ – بَعْدَ وَفَاةِ زَوْجِهَا تَسْتَأْذِنُهُ أَنْ تَعْتَدَّ فِي بَنِي خُدْرَةَ فَقَالَ – صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ – اُمْكُثِي فِي بَيْتِك حَتَّى تَنْقَضِيَ عِدَّتُك» وَلَمْ يُنْكِرْ عَلَيْهَا خُرُوجَهَا لِلِاسْتِفْتَاء ِ المبسوط للسرخسي (32/6)

قال في الفتح: والحاصل أن مدار حل خروجها بسبب قيام شغل المعيشة فيتقدر بقدره، فمتى انقضت حاجتها لا يحل لها بعد ذلك صرف الزمان خارج بيتها الدر المختار وحاشية ابن عابدين (رد المحتار) (536/3)
