Is it permissible to specify one of two days in a given week to keep the fast of nadhr (vow)?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I wanted to know about the fast of nadhr (vow).

If I make the following vow: “O Allah if my wish is fulfilled then I will fast once in a week either Monday or Thursday for two months.”

Is it permissible to fast any one of those two days every week?

Answer

In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Yes, it is permissible to make a vow to fast either of the two days every week. You will then have the choice of fasting either on Monday or on Thursday every week according to your vow. If any of the vowed fasts are missed then they have to be made up.

The fasts of nadhr (vows) are wājib (obligatory) and one should be mindful of observing them as soon as the wish or desire is fulfilled. [i] [ii] [iii]
