Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Is smoking is haraam in islam? I mean to say total haraam like alcohol?

Answer

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

It is makrooh tahreemi to smoke since:

  1. It is injurious to one’s health.
  2. It gives off a bad odour.
  3. It causes harm to others.
  4. Waste of money.
  5. It is harmful for a person’s Deen, mind, will power and environment.
  6. It serves as a bad example.

Etc. etc.

The hurmah of smoking is different from alcohol that alcohol has been clearly prohibited in the Noble Qurān whereas smoking has not been clearly mentioned.

And Allah knows best

Wassalaamu `alaykum
