Answer

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatoh

When a person passes away, the soul is removed from the body and the life of the barzakh begins. This is the interval between death and resurrection. Although the soul is removed from the jism (body), it is still aware. This is evident in the Hadith which states:

“When a person is placed in his grave and his companions depart from him, verily, he hears their footsteps, two angels come to him, they make him sit up, then they address him…” (Mishkaat, P. 24, Qadeemi)

The soul of the person will also meet other souls which passed away before him. Hasan Al-Basri (Rahmatullahi Alayhi) said that when a believer passes away, his soul will meet the souls of other believers who passed away before him and they will welcome him with happiness and ask him about the news of the worldly life just as one asks another whom they have not seen for a long time. (Al-Tazkirah lil-Qurtubi)

A similar Hadith has also been mentioned in Sunan an-Nasaai.

(Sunan an-Nasaai, 1/259-260, Qadeemi)

(Fatawa Mahmudiyya, 1/613, Faruqiyya)

When the time of resurrection arrives, the soul will be placed back into the jism, and it is evident that in the Hereafter relatives will speak to each other. It is said in a Hadith:

“Anas ibn Malik (RadiyAllahu Anhu) reported that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said: ‘In Paradise there is a street to which they would come every Friday. The north wind will blow and would scatter fragrance on their faces and on their clothes and would add to their beauty and loveliness, and then they would go back to their family after having an added luster to their beauty and loveliness, and their family would say to them: By Allah, you have been increased in beauty and loveliness after leaving us, and they would say: By Allah, you have also increased in beauty and loveliness after us.'”

(Sahih Muslim, 2/379, Rashidiyya)
