Qur’an Recitation Ceremony before Wedding

Q.Can you give me evidence that holding a “Qur’an Khawani” (Qur’an recitation ceremony) before getting married has no Islamic backing? My in-laws are insisting we have one, but I don’t believe it is from the sunnah. |
A.It should be the other way around in that if they want to do something and consider it sunnah or an emphasized act then they should bring forth the proof from the Qur’an and Hadith. The burden of proof is on the person making a claim.
Anyway this is not a sunnah practice. To believe in an action being necessary when it is not supported and proven from the Qur’an and Hadith is incorrect.
However, if there is no compulsion on attending, nor is this considered a compulsory or sunnah act, and those who do not participate in it are not frowned upon then there is no harm. If this is the case and your in-laws wish to undertake this then they may do so, and if you don’t wish to participate then this choice of yours should be respected.
If this recitation of the Qur’an is done in an informal way to attain the pleasure of Allah and for the purpose of using this good deed as a waseelah to have duas answered then this may be meritorious provided the above mentioned guidelines are strictly followed.
