I found a page somewhere that described salaat according to the Hanafi madhab (http://www.themodernreligion.com/basic/fiqh/fiqh-salah.html ) wherein it described the amin as soft. Is there a difference in ruling? Which is preferred?

Yes, it is a confirmed sunna in the Hanafi school to say “Ameen” quietly after reciting the Fatiha. The same goes for saying Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Raheem before the Fatiha; it is to be recited quietly. [Nur al-Idah, Tanwir al-Absar]
The definition of “quietly” is to recite loud enough to hear oneself (if it were otherwise quiet), but not so loud that others can hear. [Maraqi, Radd al-Muhtar]
