Would It Be Fine for a Father To Give Azaan in His Own House To Wake the People Up for Fajr?

Question:

Would it be fine for a father to give azaan in his own house to wake the people up for fajr? The salat will be prayed in the masjid by the males. The azaan is only to help them wake up and make the Shaytaan go away.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Allah Ta’ala tells us in The Quran “And exhort your people to pray, and patiently adhere to it.” [Surah Taha-20 Verse 132].

It is reported that whenever Sayyidna ` Urwah ibn Zubair (رض) saw a display of wealth, he would at once return home, call his family to prayer and recite to them this verse. Also when Sayyidna ` Umar ibn Khattab (رض) got up for his midnight (tahajjud) prayers, he would awake the other members of his family and recite to them this verse.

From this verse and narrations, we understand that it is a commendable act to call one’s family members for prayers.

In the above-mentioned case, it will be permissible to call out the Adhan. As this Adhan is done with the intent to help the family wake up and make the Shaytaan go away, it will be considered as such and is commendable. There is a principle in Islamic Jurisprudence that states “Matters are determined according to intention”1. This Adhan will not conflict with the Adhan of the Masjid.

Only Allah knows best
