Refusing Itr (Scent)

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwaa.com

Assalamu alaykum,

I was called in by the Imam to look at some errors in the Ramadhan timetable which need to be rectified urgently since Ramadhan is about to begin. When I went to the Masjid there was a Jamaat from India and someone from the Ja’maat walked up to me and after saying Salam offered me some It’r.

Since usually in our Masjid it is the norm for Jamaat brothers to offer It’r, and then start giving Dawah which takes sometime without asking if the person being spoken to is free or not, I replied to the Salam, shook the person’s hand, refused the It’r and proceeded to discuss the urgent matter with the Imam.

1) Have I committed a Sin by refusing It’r?
2) What is the injunction in Shariah when It’r is offered by someone, is it Fardh, Wajib, Sunnah or Mustahab to accept?

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salām wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuhu,

1) Anas (May Allah Ta’ala be pleased with him) narrates that Nabi صلي الله عليه وسلم said,

(4 / 128)

“Whoever is given any fragrance, then he should not refuse it, because it has pleasant smell and it is light to carry.” (Sunan Abi Dāwūd, 4/ 128)

Likewise, in a narration of Sunan at-Tirmidhi it is mentioned,

(108/5)

“Three things should not be refused: a pillow, scented oil and milk.” (Sunan at-Tirmīdhi, 5/108)

The above narrations illustrate that if one is offered perfume, he should not refuse. This is out of courtesy. If one does refuse, he will not be sinning.

2) It is Sunnah to accept the perfume. In a narration of Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhāri, it is mentioned from Thumāmah bin ‘Abdullāh,

“Anas (May Allah Ta’ala be pleased with him) would not refuse scent and he would claim that Nabi صلي الله عليه وسلم too would not refuse scent.” (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhāri, 3/ 157)
