Questions about the name Yusuf.

I have questions about naming my son Yusuf.

1)If I give my son the name Yusuf, does that mean he will go through great difficulty like prophet Yusuf (as)? I think someone close to me was saying something like they’ve seen people with the name Yusuf and those people went through difficulty/lack of rizq and the person that told me maybe feels a disinclination to that name.

2)Whenever we name someone after someone else, does that mean they will have all or some of the characteristics and have a similar life as that person we named them after?

3)If I give my son the name Yusuf with the desire and intention for my son to have all the good and none of the bad qualities of prophet Yusuf (as), will that happen for my son?
(Good qualities like his beauty, him being a good son, his very noble lineage, his taqwa and his prosperity & power that came and bad qualities being like having evil brothers or all the hardship that he went through)

Answer

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

JazakAllah for your questions.

As Muslims, we are advised to keep good names for our children, since the name of a person has an effect on his traits and characteristics.

Nabi (salallāhu ‘alayhiwasallam) said regarding the assumption of good names: “indeed you shall be called on the day of Qiyaamah with your names and the names of your fathers, so give good names to yourselves”.[1]

Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) deals with people in very unique ways and manners. Sometimes, Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) elevates the status of a person without any effort from the person himself. This is very rare. Generally, a person is made to go through many trials and tests before receiving some high post or elevated status among the people. Similar was the incident of Hadhrat Yusuf (Alayhi al-Salaam), who was one of the greatest Nabi’s. Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) elevated him to the position of Wazeer (minister) after the difficulties and trials that he had underwent.

This is the Nizam (system) of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) which is also referred to as Taqdeer.

Looking at the incident of this great Nabi of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) from that angle, the difficulties and trials that Hadhrat Yusuf (Alayhi al-Salaam) had underwent was only part of a much bigger and better plan of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala).

Nevertheless, there is no harm in keeping your son’s name Yusuf as this was the name of one of the blessed prophets of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) and Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) only chooses what is best for his Nabi (Radhiyallahu Anhu).[2] In fact, it is a good omen of goodness and piety. Insha’Allah, no harm or difficulties will come to your son in the future.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best

 Darul Iftaa Buiding Project

Assalāmu `alaikum Warahmatullāhi Wabrakatuh,

We make Du’aa you are well. The Darul Iftaa was established in the year 2011. The fundamental objective of the Darul Iftaa is to train Ulama from various parts of the world to become Muftis. In this world of scientific calculations and technological advancements, economic confusion and political disarray, a Mufti is trained to understand and analyze current situations and provide leadership for the Ummah. There is a vacuum  of competent Muftis in various parts of the world. The Ummah lacks leadership. There are currently twelve students who are studying at the Darul Iftaa. They are from United States of America, United Kingdom, Mozambique, Jamaica, Zambia, Canada and South Africa. There are many Ulama from many parts of the world who have applied to study the Iftaa course. They could not be accommodated due to lack of adequate facilities. The Darul Iftaa has therefore embarked on an expansion project.

The Darul Iftaa requests your generous contributions for the expansion project. The building project has already begun and is expected to be completed within the next three months. This is indeed a great opportunity for you to earn Sawab e Jariyah in the Aakhirah. This is a tree with many branches bearing sweet fruits for your Aakhirah. Insha’Allah. The Darul Iftaa banking details are as follows:

Bank:              FNB Bank
Account#:     62347912778
Branch:           221126

(The Darul Iftaa is registered and has the following PBO exemption number: 930039227 – 3 May 2012)

JazakAllah.
