Women Performing Salaat In A Long Skirt Or Cloak

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta Azaadville

Question:

Today, many women wear cloaks or long skirts. They do not wear an Ijaar (trouser). They only wear their underwear, i.e. their legs are not covered as when one wears an Ijaar. Can they read Salaat without their Ijaar?

Answer:

If a woman wears a cloak or a long skirt while in Salaat which covers her ankles and does not allow for her calf to become exposed during any of the postures of Salaat, then Salaat in such clothing will be permissible.

However, if during the Salaat, a quarter or more of the calf is exposed for the duration of saying Subhana Rabbiyal Atheem thrice, then this will render the Salaat invalid.

Nevertheless, the preferred method is to wear a trouser so that one is saved from any discrepancy in one’s Salaat.
