What are the Obligatory acts while following an Imam and laughing during prayer

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwaa.com

Assalam o Alaikum.I want to ask a few questions :
1. If I am following an Imam, what is required of me so that my prayer will be valid? Can you tell me what is obligatory to do for the follower while following an Imam? Moreover,is saying “Allahu Akbar” obligatory when bowing and prostrating while praying behind an Imam?
2. I know that laughing during prayer invalidates the wudoo and prayer and if it is low then it invalidates the prayer only. I want to ask what if I laugh but no sound comes out like my mouth moves but there is no sound or while I try to control my laugh I end up shaking a bit but there is no sound, will it invalidate the prayer?
I hope you will reply to these questions soon.

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

1) When following the Imam, it is compulsory for the Muqtadi (follower) to utter the first Takbeer. Thereafter, he should recite Thana and remain silent.

When the Imam says the Takbeer to go into Ruku, it is Sunnah for the Muqatadi to also say the Takbeer and proceed into Ruku. He should then recite the Tasbeehaat of Ruku (Subhana Rabbiyyal ‘Adheem)

When the Imam says Sami Allahu liman Hamida and comes up from Ruku, the Muqtadi should say Rabba lakal Hamd, and if he knows the others Duas of this posture, he may recite them.

When the Imam says the Takbeer to go into Sajda, it is Sunnah for the Muqtadi to also say the Takbeer. In Sajda, the Muqtadi should recite the Tasbeehaat of Sajda (Subhana Rabbiyyal ‘Ala).

When the Imam comes up from Sajda, it is Sunnah for the Muqtadi to say the Takbeer and come up from Sajda. If he knows the Dua of this posture, he may recite it, otherwise he can remain silent. When the Imam says the Takbeer to go in the second Sajda, the Maqtadi should do as mentioned for the first Sajda.

The second Rak’ah should be completed as the first. After the second Sajda in the second Rak’ah, when the Imam sits, it is compulsory for the Muqtadi to recite the Tashahhud.

In the fourth Rakah, after the Tashahhud, it is Sunnah for the Muqtadi to recite the Durud and Dua after Durud.

The Muqtadi should also say the words of Salah when moving the head to the right and left.

2) If there is no sound, the prayer will not be nullified.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best

Wassalaam,

Ismail Moosa (Mufti)
