Was Hakim ibn Hizam born in the Ka’bah?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Question

Is the following narration by Imam Hakim (rahimahullah) and his statement thereafter correct?

Is it authentically established that Sayyiduna Hakim ibn Hizam and  Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) were both born in the blessed Ka’bah?

(Al-Mustadrak, vol. 3 pg. 483)

Answer

It is famously known and reported through various sources that Sayyiduna Hakim ibn Hizam (radiyallahu ‘anhu) was born in the Ka’bah.

(Refer: Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 1532, Mustadrak Hakim, vol. 3 pg. 483, Al-Isabah, vol. 2 pg. 97-98, and Tadribur Rawi, vol. 5 pg. 520 and 524).

As far as the birth of Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) transpiring in the Ka’bah, Imams Nawawi, Suyuti, and others (rahimahumullah) have deemed it as a weak opinion.

Imam Nawawi (rahimahullah) has even mentioned that this is the opinion of the ‘Ulama.

His exact wording was:

(Tahdhibul Asma Wal Lughat, vol. 1, pg. 409, Tadribur Rawi, vol. 5 pg. 524 with the footnotes of Shaykh Muhammad ‘Awwamah; Also see: Siyaru A’alamin Nubala, vol. 17 pg. 165)

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
