Status of the narrator Ibn An’um Al-Afriqi

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Question

Could you please comment on the status of the Hadith narrator:

Abdur Rahman ibn Ziyad ibn An’um Al-Afriqi?

Answer

Abdur Rahman ibn An’um’s reliability has been debated among the scholars of Jarh and Ta’dil (the field of grading narrators).

Among those who deemed him acceptable was Imams Bukhari (rahimahullah).

The preferred view is that his narrations will be deemed sound (hasan) besides six of them, which have been cited in by Imam Sufyan Thawri (rahimahullah) to have had confirmed errors.

Refer to Tahdhibut Tahdhib, vol. 6 pg. 175-176 and Shaykh ‘Awwamah’s (hafizahullah) footnotes on Al-Kashif, number: 3194 and his footnotes on Musannaf ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 1190, 2260.

Note: The above is merely an answer to the question provided. One who is unqualified, should not seek to apply this and/or draw conclusions on related issues independently.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
