Authenticity of the Hadith in Ibn Majah regarding the reward of visiting the sick

Question

What is the authenticity of the Hadith you have mentioned here:

Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that he heard Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) say: “Whomsoever visits his ill Muslim brother, is walking among the harvest of Jannah until he sits. Once he sits, mercy envelopes him. [If he visits] in the morning, seventy thousand angels make du’a of forgiveness for him till the evening. If it is in the evening, seventy thousand Angels make du’a of forgiveness for him till the morning.”

Answer

Imam Ibn Majah (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith.

The narrators are reliable.

(Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 1442)

There is a difference of opinion among some Muhaddithun regarding whether the Hadith has been reported as the statement of Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) or as a Hadith of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).

(Refer: Al ‘Ilal of Imam Daraqutni, Hadith: 398)

Nevertheless, the Hadith is suitable to quote as a Hadith of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
