The Angels flee from a person one or two miles away when he speaks a lie

Question

What is the reference for this narration?

إن العبد ليكذب الكذبة فيتباعد الملك منه ميلا أو ميلين مما جاء به

Answer

Imam Abu Bakr Ibn Abid Dunya (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration on the authority of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma).

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reported that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “When a person speaks a lie, the angels move away a distance of one or two miles due to the [stench] that emanates from that [lie].”

(As Samt Wa Adabul Lisan, Hadith: 480)

Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has also recorded the Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma). This version of the narration states ‘one mile.’ See here

There is no contradiction between the two, as is evident.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
