قال لي عبد الله بن أحمد بن حنبل: حضرت أبي الوفاة فجلست عنده، وبيدي الخرقة، وهو في النزع؛ لأشد لحييه، فكان يغرق حتى نظن أن قد قضي، ثم يفيق، ويقول: لا بعد لا بعد بيده، ففعل هذا مرة، وثانية، فلما كان في الثالثة قلت له: يا أبت، إيش هذا الذي قد لهجت به في هذا الوقت فقال لي: يا بني ما تدري، فقلت: لا فقال: إبليس لعنه الله، قام بحذائي عاضا على أنامله يقول: يا أحمد فتني، وأنا أقول: لا بعد. حتى أموت
Answer
Imam Abu Nu’aym and Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahumallah) have recorded this incident regarding Shaytan appearing before Imam Ahmad on his deathbed, pleading to him saying, ‘You have abandoned me’. Imam Ahmad (rahimahullah) realised that this is Shaytan and repeatedly rejected and dismissed him.

‘Allamah Dhahabi (rahimahullah) has declared the incident ‘strange’ [فهذه حكاية غريبة، تفرد بها ابن علم فالله أعلم].
