If you love the jewellery and silk of Jannah, then abandon it in this world

Question

What is the authenticity of this Hadith?

“If you love the ornaments of Jannah and its silk, do not wear it in this world.”

Answer

Imams Nasai, Ahmad, Ibn Hibban (rahimahumullah) and other Muhaddithun have recorded this Hadith. Imam Ibn Hibban (rahimahullah) has declared the Hadith authentic (sahih).

Sayyiduna ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amir (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would prohibit his family from wearing jewellery and silk and he would say, ‘If you love the jewellery and silk of Jannah, then do not wear them in the world.”

(Sunan Nasai; Al Mujtaba, Hadith: 5136, Musnad Ahmad, vol. 4 pg. 145 and Sahih Ibn Hibban; Al Ihsan, Hadith: 5486. Also see: Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 5426, 5633, 5830 and Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2067, 2069)

The commentators have stated that this Hadith discourages excessive use of silk and jewellery as this will distract a person from the focussing on the Hereafter or this Hadith is specifically addressing males.
