Ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) explains the importance of understanding the Quran

Question

What is the authenticity and the Arabic text of this narration?

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah Ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) said: “For a long time we would learn Iman before [mastering] the Quran. A Surah would be revealed to Muhammad (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) so we would learn [the details of the law from it], what is permissible, what is impermissible and learn what significant point there was in it, just as you yourselves know the Quran. [But now by Allah] I see even [grown] men reciting the whole of the Quran from the Opening to the end, but have no idea what it is telling them to do or warning them from committing, or what the significance of it is. [To them reciting it,] is like tossing someone a cheap date.”

Answer

Imam Hakim (rahimahullah) has recorded this statement of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma). He has declared the Hadith authentic and ‘Allamah Dhahabi (rahimahullah) concurs.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
