Another version of the du’a for protecting one’s family and to avert trials

Question

Is this du’a authentic?

بسم الله على نفسي وأهلي ومالي

Answer

Imam Ibnus Sunni (rahimahullah) has recorded this version of the du’a.

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reported that a man once complained to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) that afflictions were befalling him. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) instructed him to recite the following every morning and nothing would be lost to him:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ عَلَى نَفْسِي وَأَهْلِي وَمَالِي

Bismillahi ‘ala nafsi wa ahli wa mali

In the name of Allah over my life, family and wealth

This person recited this and his afflictions disappeared.

(‘Amalul Yawmi Wal Laylah, Hadith: 51)

‘Allamah Nawawi (rahimahullah) has declared the chain weak. However, the Hadith is suitable for practice as is the rule with Hadiths of this nature.

(Al Adhkar, Hadith: 230 and Nataijul Afkar, vol. 2 pg. 410)
