Question:

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah

Is there any basis for the prohibition of women sleeping on their backs? And the Hadith which prohibits men from sleeping on their stomachs – does that also include women?

Answer:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Assalamualaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakaatuh

There is no prohibition of sleeping on one’s back. While sleeping on one’s stomach is disliked. However if one has a medical condition, there is a dispensation to allow this.

Imam Ahmad reported that Abu Hurayra (Allah be pleased with him) said, “The Prophet (Allah bless him & give him peace) passed by a man who was lying on his stomach, so he poked him with his leg and said, “This is a posture that Allah the Mighty and Majestic does not like.”

It was also reported by Ibn Hibban in his Sahih, and there are many other hadiths in the major collections that support this.
