Meaning of part of the incident when Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) delayed ‘Isha

What is the explanation of the following?

قال ابن شهاب: وذكر لي أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، قال: وما كان لكم أن تنزروا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم على الصلاة

Answer

This is part of the famous Hadith regarding the incident when Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) delayed ‘Isha Salah. Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) had expressed concern and raised his voice saying ‘The women and children have fallen off to sleep’. Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) then uttered the words in question [according to one version].

The meaning of the part in question is as follows:

Ibn Shihab (rahimahullah) says, ‘I was told that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘And you should not persist/force the Messenger of Allah for Salah.’

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 638. Refer: Al Minhaj, Hadith: 1441 and Fathul Bari, Hadith: 569)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
