Hadith on virtue of reading a thousand salutations on Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)

Kindly provide the reference and authenticity of the following narration:

“The one who recites 1000 durud (salutations) on the day of Jumu’ah shall not die until he sees his dwelling place in Jannah”

Answer

Sending salutations upon Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) is an extremely meritorious act and holds great rewards as proven through numerous authentic Hadiths. Sending a thousand salutations to Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) has also been recorded from Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu ‘anhu) who use to tell the Tabi’un to recite a thousand durud on a Friday (without mentioning a specific reward).

(See Nurul Lum’ah, pg. 104 and As Salah ‘Alan Nabi of Shaykh ‘Abdullah Sirajuddin, pg. 91)

However the narration in question is very weak and not suitable to quote.

Sayyiduna Anas ibn Malik (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Whoever sends a thousand salutations on me on any day, will not pass away until he sees his abode in Jannah”

(At Targhib Fi Fadailil ‘Amal of Hafiz Ibn Shahin, Hadith: 19)

This Hadith has been reported through several other chains, however Hafiz ibn Hajar Al ‘Asqalani, ‘Allamah Sakhawi and Hafiz ibn Hajar Al Haytami (rahimahumullah) have all classified the text of the above Hadith as very weak (munkar).

(See Al Qawlul Badi’, pg. 273 and Ad Durrul Mandud of Hafiz ibn Hajar Al Haytami, pg. 130)

(Having said this, it is possible that other scholars may have a different view…)

Note: ‘Allamah Suyuti (rahimahullah) has quoted this Hadith in Nurul Lum’ah Fi Khasaisil Jumu’ah with the words “Whoever sends a thousand salutations on me on a Friday…..”

He has referenced it to ‘At-Targhib’ of Imam Isbahani. However all the other Hadith sources that have been quoted above, have recorded this narration with the words “Whoever sends a thousand salutations on me on any day” .

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best
