Humility for those who teach you

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Is the following statement a Hadith?

 تواضعوا لمن تعلمون منه

Be humble towards those from whom you learn

Answer

Despite this statement being reported as a Hadith, it is more reliably proven as the statement of Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu’anhu) and should rather be attributed to him. This is the verdict of Imam Dhahabi (rahimahullah).

See: Faydul Qadir, Hadith: 3381, Majma’uz zawaid, vol.1 pg.129 and Sharhul Ihya, vol.8 pg.27)

However, being humble towards one’s teacher is proven through many sources, especially  by the incident of Nabi Musa (‘alayhis salam) going to Khidr (‘alayhis salam) as is recorded in the Quran. (Surah Kahf)

The famous Hadith Jibril also proves this etiquette. (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 50 and Sahih Muslim, hadith: 1)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
