The Hadith that promises seventy three favours for humanitarian aid

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

I asked lots of scholars about the Hadith:

“If one fulfills one need of a Muslim Allah Ta’la will give him seventy three favours. One is sufficient for all the needs in this world and seventy two will be used to raise his stages in the hereafter”

These people said they never read such a Hadith. Please let me know if you find it and what is its status?

Answer

This Hadith is reported by Sayyiduna Thawban (radiyallahu ‘anhu) as recorded by Imam Abu Nu’aym in Hilyatul Awliya, vol.3 pg. 58 with a weak (but suitable) chain.

It has also been reported by Sayyiduna Anas (radiyallahu’anhu) and is recorded via separate chains in the following collections:

Shu’abul Iman of Bayhaqi, Hadith: 7264,

Tareekh Baghdad of Khatib Baghdadi, vol.11 pg.175

Akhbar Asfahan of Abu Nu’aym,  (see Al-Mudawi, vol.6 pg.198) &

Tareekh Ibn ‘Asakir, vol.56 pg.95

The collective strenght of these chains make it suitable to quote. (Also see As-Sirajul Munir, vol.3 pg.336 & Tanzihu Shari’ah, vol.2 pg.136-137)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
