Imam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) being able to see the sins being washed in wudu

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

I wanted to know the authenticity of the narration which states that Imam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) could see which sins were wash away while making wudu.

Was Imam Sharani (rahimahullah) the first person who mentioned this kashf? Did Imam Abu Hanifah make a du’a to take away this kashf?

Answer

Firstly, it should be understood that the ability to see such, is indeed possible.

‘Allamah Suyuti (rahimahullah) writes: ‘Sins leave a darkness on one’s outer and inner self, which is visible to the people blessed with kashf (divine insight).’

(Qutul Mughtadhi, – with Sunan Tirmidhi, See Fathul Mulhim, vol.2 pg.664)

Secondly, I haven’t seen this narrative about Imam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) from anyone earlier than Imam Sha’rani, who actually quoted this from his mentor the reliable and famous saint; Shaykh ‘Ali Al-Khawwas (rahimahullah).

In issues like this, this is sufficient.

According to the report of Shaykh Al-Khawwas (rahimahullah), Imam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) did make du’a for this ability to be taken away.

(See Fathul Mulhim, vol.2 pg.664)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
