Narration regarding Sayyidah Fatimah’s wedding (radiyallahu ‘anha)

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Is the following narration regarding the nikah of Fatimah (radiyallahu ‘anha) reliable and does it prove that it is sunnat for the bride’s family also to provide a meal?

عن أسماء بنت عميس رضي الله عنها قالت : أعطاني رسول الله آصعا من تمر ومن شعير فقال إذا دخلن عليك نساء الأنصار فأطعميهن منه

Answer

Translation

Sayyidatuna Asma bint ‘Umays (radiyallahu’anha) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) gave her a few kilograms of date and barley [after Sayyidah Fatimah’s nikah], and said to her: ‘Feed this to the women of the Ansar when they visit you.’

This Hadith is recorded by Imam Ahmad Ibn Mani’ with a weak and broken chain as stated by ‘Allamah Busiri (rahimahullah) –da’if wa munqati’.

(Ithaful Khiyarah, Hadith: 4416)

Weak narrations of this kind cannot be used to establish rulings, like the one in question.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
