Can a girl marry her foster brother?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: My question is my sister who is in love with her khala’s son but the problem in their marriage is that once she was crying in childhood so her khala made her drink milk from her own, so we consulted many Maulanas. They rejected their marriage. So we then approached to Jamie (bhatkal) they suggested it is possible in the Shaafi’ee mazhab but not in the Hanafi Mazhab and we belong to the Hanafi Mazhab and the main problem is they are madly in love. Please suggest me solution as early as possible.

Bismillaah

A: If a child suckles from a breastfeeding woman during the foster feeding period (i.e. till two years after child birth), then the foster mother, her husband and their ascendants and descendants become mahrams of the breastfeeding child. It will not be permissible for this child to marry any of them. Hence, in this case it is not permissible for your sister to marry your khala’s son as they both are foster brother and sister.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
