Salam Behind Imam

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Hamza Karamali, SunniPath Academy Teacher

In the Shafi’i madhab, when praying behind an imam should we start saying our closing salams after the imam has said his first salam, or wait until he has finished both his salams before we start saying ours?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate

The optimal method of saying the closing salams when praying behind an imam is to wait until the imam completes both his salams before starting one’s own salams (Ibn Hajar, Tuhfat al-Muhtaj, 2.93-94).

And Allah knows best.

Hamza.
