Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) describes Nabi’s (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) simplicity and informality

Is this narration authentic and what is the meaning of ويعتقل الشاة?

عن ابن عباس قال كان رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وسلم) يجلس على الأرض، ويأكل على الأرض ويعتقل الشاة، ويجيب دعوة المملوك على خبز الشعير

Answer

Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration. ‘Allamah Haythami (rahimahullah) has graded the chain sound (hasan).

(Al Mu’jamul Kabir, Hadith: 12494, Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 9 pg. 20)

Translation

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) says, “Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would sit on the ground [without placing anything down], he would eat on the ground, he would [milk] sheep and accept the invitation of a slave to eat bread made from barley.

‘يعتقل الشاة’ means to place one’s legs between the legs of a sheep, in order to milk it.
