Shaving the head in Ihraam to apply stitches

Answered according to Hanafi Fiqh by

Q. If a person had to cut his hair in ihraam due to some excuse, for instance, he needed some stitches on his head, will Damm become necessary?

A. In the state of Ihraam, if due to the use of stitches on one’s head, one shaves/cuts a quarter or less of the head, then it would be necessary to compensate for it by giving Sadaqah. However, if more than a quarter of the head is shaved/cut, then a Damm will be necessary. (Hidaayah 1/158)

A Damm refers to slaughtering a sheep, goat etc. within the precincts of the Haram.

Sadaqah refers to the discharging of the Sadaqatul Fitr amount. The Sadaqatul Fitr amount can be discharged anywhere, although it is better to do so within the precincts of the Haram. (Shaami 2/558)
