Is it haram to be sexist in Islam?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org
Is it haram to be sexist in Islam?
Because of the difference that Allah has put between men and women the rights of each gender are also different. Based on this principle men are leaders and women are followers, therefore, if this order is followed it is a good thing but to disgrace, humiliate, and to make fun of them is not permissible. This distinction is not based on ranking or acceptance in the eyes of Allah; it is possible that a woman might be better than a man in the eyes of Allah. The proximity to Allah is based on the fear and piety:
therefore, disgracing and humiliating is not permissible. It is just that Allah made men responsible for women.
