Asking for zakat money from rick friends to help poor people

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Salam,

I have few wealthly friends in USA and i want to know if it is okay to ask them for finanical help from their zakat money to give to the poor people in India (i know a lot of people in my homwtown in India who would benefit from zakat money)

I will not be using the money for myself, I wil be the mediator between them.

Is it islamically correct or wrong to ask these rich/wealthly people for money (sadaq/zakat)?

Jazak Allah Khair,

Fawaz

الجواب وباللہ التوفیق

If an honest and trustworthy person asks his friends and relatives for their Zakat money, and they give it to him of their own free will and he spends it on classified zakat channels, then it is allowed.

But this is a dangerous path. Once the trusted property is in hand, it is not easy to protect it and dispose of it properly. In fact, the intention may go awry. Even through a legitimate title, betrayal of trust can happen, in addition, large-scale corruption may occur in future too. Therefore, it is best to stay away from it as much as possible. Since we don't know who you are, so we can't say anything about you personally.

It is better to be affiliated with the trusted religious institutions of Ahl-e-Haq Ulema locally, or if you know any places in need of Zakat, then request the owner of Zakat money to directly spend it there.
