Do I have to tell someone I am giving them Zakat?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Salam,

I want to know that if we are paying Zakat to some people is it must to tell them that this is Zakat money or just sending them that this is for your help is enough?

Also like one of my far-relative is too poor. If i send them any help money they will be happy but if i tell them this is my Zakat money might be they will be angry because of self-ego/respect. So can I send them Zakat money also or to other people only?

Regards,

Do I have to tell someone I am giving them Zakat?

الجواب وبالله التوفيق

As per the situation described in your question, while giving the money to the needy or poor it is enough to only make an intention of paying zakat and not informing them explicitly. Instead, even if you inform them that the money is a gift or loan and keep the intention in your heart of paying zakat, your obligation of paying zakatwill be fulfilled. It has been mentioned in Shami:

لان المعتبر فیہ الدافع ولذا جازت وان سماھا قرضاًاو ھبۃ فی الاصح  (شامی، ص86، ج2، بحوالہ فتاویٰ رحیمیہ ص600، ج3
