Cash back and Opening bonus permissibility on credit card

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

I am thinking about opening a credit card it’s from a major bank that does deal with interest and was wondering the credit card they are offering that has

  • No annual fee
  • No interest for 15 months

but upon opening offers 1-5% cash back for every purchase and a $200 opening bonus

(It’s the chase freedom unlimited)

Am I allowed to use the cash back and spend the $200 opening bonus for either myself or charity?

الجواب وباللہ التوفیق

It is allowed to use a credit card if it does not involve interest.

Issuance of credit card from the bank and its offer of discounts on purchases, falls in the fold of bonus/ reward, hence its use is allowed.

However, if your needs can be satisfied without the use of a credit card, it is better to avoid it.
