Social Security Benefits/Payments

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Dear brothers Muftis,

As-salaam-alaikum.

Lately, my wife & I started getting small amounts from Social Security Administration as benefits to us and since we both are
still working we are not going to get Retirement Benefits/(like) Pension, which we will, in-sha’a-Allah, in the event that we are not in a
position to work any more for our livelihood (which is certain).

Since the whole American economy is based entirely on “Interest” and the money coming to us from Social Security Administration, we fear
of it being likely contaminated with “Interest”.

Under the circumstance, please let us have your “Fatwa” whether or NOT it is “Halal” for us to utilize the amounts
received from Social Security Administration. Thank you.

Jazakum Allahu khairan.

الجواب وبالله التوفيق

As per our knowledge, the social security amount paid to individuals is a return of the money which was previously deducted as taxes from their salary or is a way of the government supporting its citizens and residents.

If however you have absolute confirmation of it being pure interest or money contaminated by interest then you should not take that money.
