Covering Head in Front of Mehram

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullah

I have heard that it is not permissible for women to uncover their head in front of their mehrams and should be covered at all times even at home. Please let me know as soon as possible if this is the correct ruling in this matter.

Walaikumassalam Warahmatullah

If namehram relatives are living in the same house, such as cousin brothers (maternal or paternal) then you should always cover your head in the house as well. It is impermissible to come in front of them without covering your head. However, if only your husband or other mehram relatives are living in your house, then there is provision of the permissibility to keep your head uncovered. This permissibility is provided that one is safe from the lust of the mehram individuals. Since it is an era full of fitnah, keeping one’s head uncovered constantly leads to becoming a habit which can lead to a feeling of forgetfulness altogether and the differentiation between mehram and namehram becomes faded. Therefore, it is recommended and the path of caution to cover your head while you are at home.
