Is It Permissible to Get Dental Work Done For Beautification?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Ustadh Salman Younas

Question: My question is regarding cosmetic dental work. Is it permissible to get cosmetic work done such as braces, bridges and veneers? Primarily for the purpose of beautification and no other reason.

Is it permissible for a (muslim) dentist to carry out such work on patients who are muslim or non-muslim?

Answer: assalamu `alaykum

Yes, this would be permissible. Such cosmetic work is not considered altering or mutilating the creation of God, which is prohibited. It is similar to cosmetic surgery for removing scars or fixing a deformity, and does not become impermissible even if accompanied with an intention of beautification.
