Are STDs a curse from Allah?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

I would like to know WHAT is the position of Islam regarding the people who get STD (sexual transmitted diseases)? Does STD consider as curse from Allah or consider as punishments?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

There are two issues:

1.       Looking at the bigger picture;

2.       Looking at the specific case.

In terms of the bigger picture, there is no doubt that misfortune befalls people as groups because of errors, or as a trial;

Allah Most High tells us:

042.030         Whatever of misfortune strikes you, it is what your right hands have earned. And He forgives much.

In particular cases, the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) has told us that, ‘The one who repents is like the one who did not sin.” [Ibn Maja] Thus, even if STDs were acquired through wrongful action, we assume that the person has repented, and help them deal with their problem with mercy, love, and wisdom. Often, such diseases spread through no sin of the person…

Wassalam,
Faraz Rabbani
