What is the proof for fasting three days if one broke an oath, and how come in the Hanafi Madhhab it’s continuous and in the Shafi’i it’s continuous or separately?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate

One of the proofs to establish a ruling is with a famous hadith (khabar al-mashhur), as is the case with the atonement for fasting.

It has been reported by Ubay ibn Ka’b that he use to recite, ‘fasiyaamu thalathati ayyamin mutatabi’aat . (…then one has to fast three consecutive days…)

(It has been reported by Hakim in his Mustadrak)

It has been reported by Ubay ibn Ka’b and Abdullah ibn Mas’ud that they both use to recite , ‘fasiyaamu thalathati ayyamin mutatabi’aat .

(It has been reported by Imam Ahmad)

It has been reported by Mujahid that the recitation (qira’ah) of Abdullah ibn Mas’ud was ‘fasiyaamu thalathati ayyamin mutatabi’aat.

(It has been reported by Abdur Razzaq in his Musannaf)

It has been reported by Ibn Jurayj, he said, I heard Ata saying the recitation (qira’ah) ‘fasiyaamu thalathati ayyamin mutatabi’aat.

of Abdullah ibn Mas’ud has reached us and we recite it.

(It has been reported by Abdur Razzaq in his Musannaf)

The word ‘mutatabi’aat’ being the famous recitation (qira’ah) of Abdullah ibn Mas’ud is like a famous hadith which has been transmitted from the three generations and onwards by a group of people whom cannot be accused of lying, even though the word ‘muta’tabiaat’ (consecutive) is not in other recitations (qira’aat), like in the copies of the Qur’an we have today.

And Allah Knows Best
