Is divorce valid if one was forced at gunpoint and at the tip of a knife?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Jamia Binoria

What does the scholars of Islam have to say regarding the following issue? I divorced my wife two times. Is divorce valid if one was forced at gunpoint and at the tip of a knife?

الجواب حامدا و مصلیا

The questioner did not mention whether the divorces given at gun point was by him signing on a divorce deed or verbal. However, if the questioner only signed a divorce deed and didn’t utter anything (i.e. utter any words of divorce), then divorce did not occur. On the other hand, if the questioner gave two divorces verbally and before or afterwards no more verbal or written divorces was given, then two divorces occurred upon his wife. He can either return to his wife during her waiting period or remarry her after her waiting period.
And Allah knows best.
