Embracing each other during Eid or any other celebration

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Jamia Binoria

Assalamu Alaikum Is it Sunnath to do Mu’anaqa (Embracing each other) during Eid or any other celebration? And how many times? Please explain with references. Wassalam

الجواب حامدا و مصلیا

Congratulating a person or embracing (Muanaqa) during Eid or in happy occasions is, in itself, permissible. However considering it to be Sunnath or making the particular number of times, for Ex; to do Muanaqa three times, as necessary and essential, and, making a person who do not do so a target of finding fault with, or running down upon are impermissible, rather in such circumstances this will become an innovation (Bid’ath), refraining from which is essential.
