I understand the position of the ḥanafī scholars in relation to women attending Masjids and also the position of other schools of thought and some contemporary ḥanafī scholars. However, I have a specific query, what is the actual position of Imam Abū Ḥanīfah in this regard?

Answer
The position of Imam Abū Ḥanīfah (d. 150/767), as mentioned in al-Aṣl, is that it is permissible for elderly ladies to attend in Fajr, Ishāʾ and the Eid prayers. Otherwise, it is makrūḥ for them to attend in other prayers, just as it is makrūḥ for young women to attend in any congregational prayer. Interestingly, Imam Bukhārī (d. 256/870) shares a similar view except that he does not differentiate between elderly and young females and also permits their attendance in the congregational eclipse Ṣalāh.
جاء في الأصل (١/٣٨١): قلت: أرأيت النساء هل عليهن خروج في العيدين؟ قال: قد كان يرخص لهن في ذلك. فأما اليوم فإني أكره لهن ذلك. قلت: أفتكره لهن أن يشهدن الجمعة والصلاة المكتوبة في جماعة؟ قال: نعم. قلت: فهل ترخص لشيء منهن؟ قال: أرخص للعجوز الكبيرة أن تشهد العشاء والفجر والعيدين. فأما غير ذلك فلا، انتهى. وراجع فيه (١/٤٤٦) والمبسوط (٢/٤١) والمحيط البرهاني (٢/١٠١). وقال الإمام البخاري رضي الله عنه في الصحيح (٨٦٤): باب خروج النساء إلى المساجد بالليل والغلس. وقال (٨٩٤): باب هل على من لا يشهد الجمعة غسل من النساء والصبيان وغيرهم. وقال (٩٧٤): باب خروج النساء والحيض إلى المصلى. وقال (١٠٥٣): باب صلاة النساء مع الرجال في الكسوف. وراجع المجلد الثالث من نبراس الساري وتقديمي في أوله۔
