The one who consumes alcohol is like an idol worshipper

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Question

I want to know the reference for this exact wording and the authenticity of it

شارب الخمر كعابد وثن

Answer

Imam Bazzar (rahimahullah) has recorded these words on the authority of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr (radiyallahu ‘anhuma).

(Musnad Bazzar; Al Bahruz Zakkhar, Hadith: 2382)

‘Allamah Haythami (rahimahullah) states, “Fitr ibn Khalifah appears in this [chain], he is reliable. There is some slight [criticism] against him, however, it does not affect his [credibility].” (رواه البزار، وفيه فطر بن خليفة وهو ثقة، وفيه كلام لا يضر)

(Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 5 pg. 70)

The narration is also well corroborated. See here

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
