Imam Abu Hanifah’s (rahimahullah) response when told ‘Fear Allah!’

Question

Can you mention the reference for this?

A man told Imam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) to fear Allah and he began shaking and became pale. Then Imam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) said: “May Allah reward you we need to be reminded of this”

Answer

‘Allamah Dhahabi (rahimahullah) has cited this incident in Tarikhul Islam and Siyaru A’alamin Nubala.

Yazid ibn Kumayt relates, “I heard a man saying to Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah), ‘fear Allah!’ Imam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) began to tremble, became pale, lowered his head and said, ‘May Allah reward you with good. We are always in need of people who will remind us of this.’”

(Tarikhul Islam, vol. 6 pg. 993, Siyaru A’alamin Nubala, vol. 6 pg. 400)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
