Question
Are there any Hadiths which mention the words that should be said after every line of Adhan? I did remember reading such a Hadith but would like to know the full Hadith with its source and authenticity.
Answer
Many Hadiths have been recorded regarding the query above.
(Refer: Al-Adhkar, Hadiths: 102-110)
One of these Hadiths has been cited below:
Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said: ‘When the Muadhin says: “Allahu Akbar” “Allahu Akbar” and then one of you replies/says: “Allahu Akbar” “Allahu Akbar”;
then [when] he [i.e the Muadhin] says: “Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah” “Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah”, he [i.e the one listening to the Adhan] replies: “Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah”
then [when] he [i.e the Muadhin] says: “Ash-hadu anna muhammadar rasulullah”, he [i.e the listener] replies: “Ash-hadu anna muhammadar rasulullah”
then [when] he [i.e the Muadhin] says: “Hayya ‘alas salah”, he [i.e the listener] replies: “La howla wa la quwwata illa billah”
then [when] he [i.e the Muadhin] says: “Hayya ‘Alal Falah, he [i.e the listener] replies: “la howla wa la quwwata illa billah”.
then [when] he [i.e the Muadhin] says: “Allahu Akbar” “Allahu Akbar”, he [i.e the listener] replies: “Allahu Akbar” “Allahu Akbar”
then [when] he [i.e the Muadhin] says: “La ilaha illallah”, he [i.e the listener] replies from his heart [i.e with total conviction and belief in his words]: “La ilaha illallah”
he will enter paradise.
[i.e when a person listens and responds to the azan with conviction, his reward will ultimately be paradise].
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 385; Also see, Mirqat, Hadith: 658)
Since this Hadith has been recorded by Imam Muslim in his Sahih, it is therefore authentic.
For further detail, kindly refer to this respective chapter in the Hadith books along with their commentaries.
