An unreliable narration on the virtue of salutation being equal to battle and Hajj

Question

Is this authentic?

“When a man sends salutations (durud), he gets the reward of four hundred jihad and each battle is equivalent to four hundred Hajj”

Answer

The full narration is as follows:

Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Whomsoever performs Hajj and goes out in battle after, will receive that reward of four hundred Hajj for the battle.” Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said: ‘Those who were unable to perform Hajj and go out in battle became heartbroken.’ Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) then said, ‘Allah ‘Azza Wa Jalla revealed to me, Whenever anyone sends a salutation upon you, he will receive the reward of four hundred battles, each battle equivalent to four hundred Hajj.”

(Al Majalisul Makkiyah of Abu Hafs Al Mayyanishi; Refer: Al Qawlul Badi’, pg. 274)

However, ‘Allamah Sakhawi (rahimahullah) has declared the narration unreliable (تالف) and says the signs of fabrication are evident. (لوائح الوضع عليه ظاهرة)

(Al Qawlul Badi’, pg. 274)

The narration in question is therefore not suitable to quote. There are authentic virtues of salutations which should be quoted instead.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
