Ashara Mubashara Query

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwaa.com

Aww
I pray that you are in the best of health ia.
I was doing some reading on the ten companions promised paradise (may Allah be pleased with them) and their respective biographies.
In doing so, I came across a narration where Zubayr (ra) was said to have beaten some of wives severely and another where Umar (ra) hit his wife Jamilah causing her to fall. I usually ignore them these things, however the references were Ibn Sa’d.

Unfortunately, these narrations have been causing me a lot of doubts and have made focusing during Ibadah extremely difficult at times. May Allah protect me from this waswasa and forgive me for these evil thoughts.

Would you be able to comment on the reliability of these narrations and whether they are authentic or not?

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salām wa rahmatullāhi wa barakātuhu,

The veracity of the incident regarding Zubayr ibn Al-ʿAwwām (may Allāh be pleased with him) is unreliable and unauthentic.

The same can be said regarding the incident of ʿUmar (may Allāh be pleased with him).

Furthermore, it should be understood that in The Period of Ignorance, it was the custom and culture of the Arabs to beat their womenfolk.

The Prophet ﷺ then prohibited men from doing so. However, when the women sensed the support of the Prophet ﷺ, they took advantage of the situation and began acting boldly towards their husbands.

Subsequently, permission to physically discipline the womenfolk was then given, but on condition, it was just a slight tap to make them aware whenever they acted inappropriately with their husbands, and in order to protect them from being dealt with in a manner that was harmful.

Lastly, the fact that Allāh has given these companions glad-tidings of Jannah in this world already, the thought of them doing such actions that are not befitting should not be entertained, and one should seek refuge in Allāh from evil whispers of Shayṭān (be it from amongst mankind of Jinn-kind).

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best
