Palaces of gold for the one who forgives the injustice against him on the Day of Qiyamah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Question

Is the following Hadith authentic?

Sayyiduna Anas (radiyallahu ‘anhu) has reported that on the Day of Judgement, there will be two people in front of Allah. One person from them will say: “O Allah, my brother has done injustice to me, so put my sin on his shoulder.

Allah Ta’ala will say to that person: “Lift your head and look inside Jannah [heaven].”

The person will say: “I can see a city of gold and palaces of gold.”

Allah Ta’ala will then say to that person: “If you forgive your brother you can be the owner of that.”

(Mustadrak Hakim, vol. 4 pg. 576)

Kindly also mention whether any other scholar besides Imam Hakim (rahimahullah) has graded this Hadith as authentic. What was the opinion of Imam Dhahabi (rahimahullah) regarding this Hadith (i.e. did he classify it as weak or authentic)?

Answer

The Muhaddithun have differed with regards to the grading of this Hadith.

Whilst ‘Allamahs Hakim and ‘Azizi (rahimahumallah) have both graded this Hadith as authentic, other Muhaddithun such as ‘Allamahs: Bukhari, Ibn Hibban, Dhahabi, Ibn Hajar, Busiri, and others (rahimahumullah) have graded it as weak, if not very weak.

(Mustadrak Hakim along with Talkhisul Mustadrak, vol. 4 pg. 576, Al-Mughni ‘An Hamlil Asfar, Hadith: 1902, Al-Matalibul ‘Aliyah, Hadith: 4590, Ithaful Khiyarah, Hadith: 7787, Faydhul Qadir, Hadith: 123, Ithafus Sadatil Muttaqin, vol. 6 pgs. 267, vol. 10 pg. 480, and As-Sirajul Munir, vol. 1 pg. 37)

Nonetheless, this Hadith has many supporting narrations and is suitable to quote due to corroboration.

Translation

Hereunder is an explanatory translation of the full narration:

It has been reported on the authority of Sayyiduna Anas (radiyallahu ‘anhu) that he said:

“Whilst Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) was sitting, we suddenly saw him smile so much that his front teeth [i.e. incisors] showed. Umar [radiyallahu ‘anhu] asked him: “What has caused you to smile O Rasulullah [sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam]? May my father and mother be sacrificed for you!”

He [i.e. Rasulullah – sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam] replied: ‘Two men from my ummah kneeled before the Rabb of all honor, and then one of them said: “O my Rabb, take on my behalf my brother to task for having oppressed me!”

Allah Ta’ala [blessed and exalted is He] then said to the one seeking [retribution]: “What will you do to your brother whilst not a [single] good deed of his remains?

He [i.e. the one seeking retribution] replied: “O my Rabb, then he should [be made to] carry some of my burdens/sins!”

He [i.e. Anas – radiyallahu ‘anhu] said: “[At this point] due to crying, the eyes of Rasulullah [sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam] flowed [with tears].

He [i.e. Rasulullah – sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam] then [continued and] said: ‘Indeed that day is severe! All of mankind will need their burdens/sins to be carried for them [i.e. They will be in great desperation and severe need for someone to assume for them the burden of their sins].

Allah Ta’ala then said to the one seeking [retribution]: “Lift your gaze and look in the gardens [of paradise].”

He [i.e. the one seeking retribution] then raised his head and said: “O My Rabb, I see cities and castles of gold, ornamented with pearls! Which prophet is this for? Or Which extremely truthful person is this for? Or which martyr is this for?”

He [i.e. Allah Ta’ala] responded: “This is for the one who gave the fee.”

He [i.e. the one seeking retribution] then asked: “O My Rabb, and who has that [amount to give]?”

He [i.e. Allah Ta’ala] replied: “You possess it!”

He [i.e. the one seeking retribution] then said [perplexed]: With what?! [i.e. What do I possess, to give for that spot in Jannah?]

He [i.e. Allah Ta’ala] replied: “By forgiving your brother.”

He [i.e. the one seeking retribution] then said: “O my Rabb, then I have indeed forgiven him!”

Allah Azza wa Jalla [exalted and great is He] replied: [if that is so,] then take the hand of your brother and admit him into Jannah [paradise, i.e. both of you go in together!].”’

At that point, Rasulullah [sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam] said:  Fear Allah and Reconcile between yourselves, for indeed Allah Ta’ala [loves this and will therefore] reconcile amongst the Muslims [on the day of Qiyamah].’”

(Refer: Faydhul Qadir, Hadith: 123)
