Leading a simple life ensures safety in the Hereafter

Question

Kindly translate this Hadith that appears in Musnad Bazzar?

عن أبي الدرداء، رضي الله عنه، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: إن بين أيديكم عقبة كئودا لا ينجو فيها إلا كل مخف

Answer

The translation is as follows:

Sayyiduna Abud Darda (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Before you lies a very steep incline. Only those who are light [and unburdened] will be safe.”

(Musnad Bazzar; Kashful Astar, Hadith: 4118. Also see: Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 10 pg. 263)

The ‘steep incline’ in this Hadith refers to the difficulties which lie between a person and his entry into Jannah, like death, the grave and the terrors of the Day of Qiyamah. [The Hadith therefore encourages living a life of simplicity].

(Refer: Mirqatul Mafatih, Hadith: 5204)
