Question

What is the authenticity of this Hadith?

Asma’ bint Yazid reported: The Prophet (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “The greatest name of Allah is in these two Verses: ‘Your God is one God, there is no God but Him, the Gracious, the Merciful’ (2:163). As well as the opening of Surah Alu ‘Imran: Allah, there is no God but Him, the Living, the Sustainer.’” (3:2)

 

Answer

Imams Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah (rahimahumullah) have recorded this Hadith. Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has declared the Hadith authentic (hasanun sahih).

Sayyidah Asma bintu Yazid (radiyallahu ‘anha) reported that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “The Ismul A’azam of Allah is contained in the following two Verses:

1)  وَإِلَهُكُمْ إِلَهٌ وَاحِدٌ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الرَّحْمَنُ الرَّحِيمُ

Your Deity is one Deity. There is no other Deity but Him, the Compassionate the Merciful

(Surah Al Baqarah, Verse: 163)

2) The opening Verse of Surah Alu ‘Imran, الم اللَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الحَيُّ القَيُّومُ

Alif Lam Mim. Allah! There is no Deity but He, the Living, the Maintainer

(Surah Alu ‘Imran, Verses: 1-2)
